Unit 203

Task A – Table 1

AC 1.1, 1.2

Complete the following table identifying how to establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people and how you need to adapt your behaviour when interacting with children of different ages

Stage How to establish respectful, professional relationships Ways of adapting behaviour (so it is appropriate)
a) Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1

It is important to take into consideration the different needs and levels of development of the children you are building relationships with, reflect this in the way you communicate with them.

With foundation children, for example you could communicate in a much simpler way to make sure they understand. It is also important to relate to children in a way, which makes them feel respected and valued whilst encouraging them to respect others. It is also important to lay down the ground rules so that everyone knows what is expected of them and that they are being treated fairly positive manner and are approachable at all times.

Make sure you are approachable, kind, caring, make the child feel secure, make sure you are down at the child’s level.

Foundation 1 children may tire easily so things need to be simple. They may also find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time.

Check that the children understand what you have been saying.

Give them time to speak, let them think before they answer your questions.
b)
Key Stage 2

At this stage children should understand, they are starting to mature in the way they communicate with us, so no need to simplify it.

A good positive consistent, attitude.
They are less self-centred at this age, more considerate, invite other people to speak first. Sometimes they may need reminding, that they need to wait their turn to speak. This may start to be their personality, but it might be due to their immaturity still.
