There were many reasons why Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. These include: The Wall Street Crash of 1929, the weaknesses of Weimar, fear of communism and Hitler’s personality and powerful propaganda. He appealed to every part of society as he promised different things for different people and they were flexible.
Germany had suffered form hyper inflation in 1923 so the economy’s recovery was financed by the USA, although unfortunately in 1929, during the Wall Street Crash, America called in it’s foreign loans which destroyed the Weimar Republic and unemployment rose to 6 million. In July 1930 Chancellor Brüning cut government expenditure, wages and unemployment pay which ultimately is the worst thing he could have done during a depression. The Reichstag would not agree to his actions so President Hindenburg used Article 48 to pass the measures by decree. Germany was bitter and angry, this fuelled Nazi popularity. Alarmed by the obvious failure of democracy, middle-class citizens decided the country needed a strong government. The Treaty of Versailles and reparations were blamed by nationalists and racists. The Government was in chaos, Brüning was dismissed in 1932 and his replacement - Von Papen - lasted six months and the Chancellor after him - Schleicher - lasted two months. German people became more and more desperate for strong leadership and the Nazi’s provided that.
In 1917 there had been a Communist revolution in Russia where the communist party took over all businesses, factories and farms. Germans, particularly businessmen and farmers were frightened that Communists might take over in their country. Communists also didn’t believe in religion so it scared churchgoers as well.
