Operations Management deals with the design and management of products, processes, and supply chains. It considers the acquisition, development, and utilization of resources that firms need to deliver goods and services their clients want (MIT Sloan, 2012). Health care operations management is the oversight of staff performance and service delivery. Health care operations management ensures the efficient, effective, and high-quality delivery of services, involving process management, problem-solving and strategic planning.
Roles and Goals
The scope of the healthcare operations management includes extensive focus on the following: workflow, physical layout, capacity design, physical network optimization, staffing levels, productivity management, supply chain and logistics management quality management, and process engineering (Langabeer, 2008). The operations manager does many different functions in the hospital. All of the roles operations managers take on are to complete the goals of the organization. They have multiple broad goals and functions in the hospital including the following: reduce costs, reduce variability and improve logistics flow, improve productivity, improve quality of customer service, and continuously improve business processes (Langabeer, 2008).
The health care operations management position is very important to the health care organization because they implement and follow through with the goals and functions of the organization. The operations manager figures out waste, improves utilization, and stabilizes and reduces the overall cost of delivering health care services. Operations effectiveness is a measure of how well the organization is run. It considers both the efficiency of resources inputs and usage and the effectiveness of overall management in achieving desired goals and outcomes (Kilmann and Kilmann, 1991).
