Counseling as a Christian

In our world today individuals and families often come into contact with a variety of stressful or unpleasant situations or experiences at some point during their lives. Often times we are able to work through these events, emotions and feelings on our own (with the help of God, of course), but then there are times when we must turn to a professional to help us out. The fact that at the very beginning of our existence we are born with sin, it is a given that humans will suffer. I absolutely believe that sin leads to suffering, whether it is a direct result of our own sinful choices or as a punishment from God.   A counselor’s role is to guide a person to the spiritual base they have already established and to open their eyes to the type of emotional healing that they require.
I am a Christian who has been given the gift of understanding and recognizing one's mental health needs; whether it be child, adolescent or adult, marital, family or individual. I feel that mental health and faith go hand in hand. When a person is able to understand their faith and have a healthy relationship with God, through prayer and spiritual understanding, they tend to be more emotionally and mentally healthy. I recognizes that there is a profound need for something more than traditional psychological counseling in the world today. I feel like a counselor should inspire hope by incorporating traditional therapy enhanced with scripture based counseling. It is my opinion that a counselor should offer more than a typical psychological clinic or counseling center. They should work to assist and encourage people in healing their wounded inner self with treatment that nurtures the starving spirit. Christian counselors should provide psychological and counseling services from a religious perspective.   They should have knowledge in the areas of Christian principles and psychology as well as human services and sociology.
