The Places We Feel We Belong Do Not Shape Our Identities, Experience Does

Who are we? Where do we belong? Before we are born we already possess genes, antecedents and a socio-cultural history which will determine our appearance and dictate the nature of our actions, values and thoughts, leaving us inclined to respond to situations in a particular manner. In addition to these factors govern our origins and ancestry that determine the environment into which we are born. However the multifaceted self is plastic, malleable, sculptured by experience and the places where we belong. It is unequivocal that one’s identity changes throughout their life time to adapt to their current circumstances. Our identities are shaped by the places where we feel we belong, although there are many other factors which shape and constitute the aspects of who we are. Our experiences have the most profound effect in shaping our identities; furthermore our experiences may decide the physical places and the social niches where we feel we belong. The experiences we have in life will form the basis from which we draw our opinions and values. Our opinions and values are essentially the true essence of who we are as individuals. It is the experiences we have within the places where we feel we belong that form our identity, the places themselves only provide the setting for our experience. The places we feel we belong may influence the nature of our experiences and the experiences which most greatly define our identities may at times occur in the places where we feel we belong, however many defining experiences happen outside of our comfort zones and the places we belong.
Our identities (and our lives) are subject to change, they are more fragile than we think. One major event may change us for ever; our characteristics may become the polar opposite of what they once were.
