Roles and Responsibility of a teacher

In this essay I will discuss the roles and responsibilities of a teacher. Due to this being such an extensive subject I am going to focus on what I believe are the most important aspects of being a teacher. I will specifically highlight some key areas taken from The Education and Training Foundation.

The Professional Standards which were established in 2014 are divided into three sections, they are; Professional Skills, Professional Knowledge and Understanding, Professional Values and Attributes. Between the three subcategories there are twenty standards, they cover the importance of being a professional and fair teacher who has a vast knowledge and understanding of the subject they will be teaching. Just as important however they need the skills and expertise to plan, deliver and assess the learner to ensure the best possible outcomes. (Mooney 2016) “The Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers are very clear, cut out all the waffle, and help observations to be more focused on both teaching and learning and learner progresses”

As teachers we are guided by certain Acts that have been put in place by Parliament to help protect children. The Equality Act 2010 was passed to replace nine other major Acts of Parliament; they were consolidated as one to make it easier

to protect students from discrimination and harassment. Under this act, there are 8 ‘protected characteristics’. These are:
  * Age
  * Disability
  * Gender reassignment
  * Pregnancy and maternity
  * Race
  * Religion or belief
  * Sex
  * Sexual Orientation.

Under section 175 of the Education Act 2002 teachers have a legal duty for the safeguarding of all children under the age of 18. It is everyone’s responsibility for the safeguarding of children. The NCPCC (2016) defines Safeguarding as:
