Jobs in Marketing

Marketing as a discipline has been clouded with a lot of misconceptions and subject to several interpretations over the past few years but for the purpose of this write up would like to go with the definition of Dr Kotler which I believe encapsulates the true meaning of marketing. He defines marketing as “the science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy the needs of a target market at a profit.   Marketing identifies unfulfilled needs and desires. It defines measures and quantifies the size of the identified market and the profit potential. It pinpoints which segments the company is capable of serving best and it designs and promotes the appropriate products and services.”(Philp Kotler).
Marketing is essentially the lifeline of doing business, its scope spans across almost every organization you can think of: from government to non-governmental organizations (NGO), business entities and religious organizations just to mention a few. Because marketing has a broad field of analysis, its activities are manifest in almost all organizations. In line with this, job prospects and careers opportunity abounds in many areas too. For the purpose of this essay, I will attempt to explore career opportunities in marketing which are both satisfying and financially rewarding. Career opportunities in marketing ranges from entry level; requiring little or no training to midcareer professionals requiring extensive education and experience. Some of the career fields that we shall be looking into are: Marketing managers, Advertising Managers, Product Managers, Market research analysts, Public Relations Managers, Retail Managers and Procurement Managers.
