Unit 1 - Understand the principles and requirements of assessment.

1.1   Explain the function of assessment in learning and development:

There are numerous important functions of the assessment process, they are a vital tool when used correctly and regular to ensure that learning has or is taking place, and ensuring that the course criteria are being followed. Learners may be being assessed towards formal qualifications, or skills may be being assessed for certain tasks in their particular course or occupation. By using assessments correctly as an assessor I will be confident that my learner has the required level of knowledge and understanding on a particular subject of what is being taught or tested. Gravells (2012) agrees that assessments are best used as a focus on improving and reinforcing learning as well as measuring any achievements.

Assessment types include the following:

Initial assessment: Is carried out prior to or at the beginning of the course. It is a formal way of finding out information on learner’s skills and knowledge to date. It gives an appropriate starting point for learners and allows the assessor to identify any specific learner needs, for example any specific assessment requirements, their learning style, or further training and support that may be required. This information can be gathered from application forms and interviews.

Formative assessment: This should take place continually throughout the course to allow progression to take place. It helps us to see how learners are progressing by tracking their progress before moving on to other topics. It is also useful for allowing us to adapt our teaching to cover any additional work which may be necessary. Formative assessment can involve questioning, observation, quizzes and short tasks. If the programme that is being assessed is provided for me examinations or tests may be carried out.
