(3.3) Case studies –
1. Chris works as a teaching assistant in a local primary school.   As a group of year 5 children were getting ready for PE, Chris notices bruising in lines across the back of a boy called Marc.   He asked Marc how he hurt himself but he said, “It’s nothing” and quickly pulls down his top.   As Marc left the room he approached Chris and said “please don’t say anything to Mom, or Uncle Paul will be cross with me”.

What would you do in this situation?
If I was in this situation I would set up a meeting with the child again after the PE lesson and not coming across as too protective that the child becomes scared. I’d build a profession relationship with the child so he would be able to talk to me about any issues over the next couple days or weeks. I would keep an eye on how he socialises with other children. I would explain to the child that if the school did notify the parents that he would be safe and won’t get any abuse from his uncle and also be safe.

What would be your role within placement in dealing with this scenario?
My role would be supervising the child to see if there are any areas of development he is lacking and to let his main teacher and also notify the head of school.

2. At break time you enter the toilets and witness Daisy using a pair of scissors to cut into   her arm she quickly puts the scissors away and hurries out of toilets and into the playground.

What would you do in this situation?
I’d notify the main teacher that she maybe harming herself. Also I’d try and talk to her and ask where she found the scissors and ask her if I could retrieve them back. After taking the scissors away from her I’d set up little meetings with her to build her confidence...
