Barriers to Health and Social Care Services

BARRIERS TO HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE SERVICES

WHAT ARE THE BARRIERS?

Examples of barriers to health and social care services include:
1. Disability
2. Financial difficulty
3. Geographical location
4. Communication
5. Culture
6. Gender
7. Inadequate resources e.g. staff, finances
8. Ignorance

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE BARRIERS?

1. In certain cultures, some treatments might be considered unacceptable which may lead to death e.g. blood transfusion for Jehovah witnesses.
2. Lack of enough staff in a service center may lead to longer waits for patients needing urgent attention. This could also lead to death or deterioration of their health.
3. Lack of money to fund services could lead to a cut in much needed services.
4. Written/spoken information not in the person’s own language means the information is not understood and may deter some from using the service.
5. People may suffer from lack of self-independence and self-esteem leading to stress and depression.
6. Those unable to access services may become isolated and depressed.
7. Unemployment may increase as inadequate resources means a cut in staff.

HOW TO OVERCOME THESE PROBLEMS

1. Providing information to eradicate ignorance.
2. Handing out multi language leaflets and information sheets to people speaking different languages
3. Braille and hearing aids offered to people with hearing and visibility difficulties.
4. Performing home visits for clients who are unable to leave their homes.
5. Encouraging people to enter health and care professions to ensure enough staffing.
6. Increase national taxation on alcohol, cigarettes, petrol etc. to increase funds for services.
7. Offering cheaper or free services.
