2.4 DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN BENEFICIAL CONFLICT AND DESTRUCTIVE CONFLICT WITHIN A TEAM
BENEFICIAL CONFLICT leads to and promotes
Team members solve problems together and are all involved
Helps identify issues
Improves work efficiency
Improves team awareness
Positive outcomes
Strengthens teams
Honest and open communication
Develops people’s personality and promotes individual and team assertiveness and confidence
It is a win win situation for all concerned

DESTRUCTIVE CONFLICT – leads to and promotes
Reduces work performances
Damages efficiency of team
Issues are not resolved and can continue to escalate – leads to feels of low morale
No-one benefits
Lack of honest and open communication
Negative outcomes
No evidence of teams working to resolve conflict
Issues stay un resolved

2.5 EVALUATE METHODS OF DEALING WITH CONFLICT WITHIN A TEAM
Understanding and appreciating various viewpoints involved in conflict is essential when managing and resolving conflict in teams
Acknowledge conflict
It is essential a manager does this – discuss with individuals – groups and wider team – this is a good method and way of helping team recognise the conflict and ensures they know manager is listening and supporting
The manager can describe the impact the conflict is having on team’s performance and team relationships
At this point the start of resolution can commence

Importance of conflict
In order to resolve the manager needs to put at the top of her agenda
Important that manager keeps opinions to self at this point – If manager gives own opinion at this point it may come across as manager having favourites further fuelling the fire
Let the team know you are non-judgemental and encourage open communication
Listen to all view points within team – effective as individuals feel listened to and valued
