1- UNDERSTAND PERSON-CENTRED APPROACHES IN ADULT SOCIAL CARE.

1.1- Describe person-centred approaches.

The underlying purpose of Person-centred approaches is to ensure that the individual needing care is placed at the centre of the decision making process about their life, the services and support they want and need. Under this system, the individual is always placed at the centre of the planning of the care package needed, in that they will always be consulted and that their views will always come first. The care plan is then tailor-made to that individual, and it should include all aspects of care, from the Social and Health Services, from the individual’s family and from other health services. This applies to those people with learning disabilities, mental health problems, and physical disabilities, and to older people who need support.

1.2- Explain why person-centred values must influence all aspects of social care work.

Person centred approaches are crucial to providing quality care and support. They help professional care and support workers to find out what is important to the individual they are supporting, and enable services to be built around what matters most to that individual.
It is vital for the social care worker to work using these methods to establish the needs and wishes of the individual. This will also mean that individuals will feel empowered and in control of their lives, be more confident about making decisions, will feel valued and respected.

Each person is unique - no 2 individuals are the same, and this needs to be implemented in the day-to-day care of each individual.
