Leadership and Power
Leadership and power are two different concepts but also very similar. This paper discusses the mini case of Ho Ching and if she is influential as a leader and the tactics used to influence others. The major source of her power will be examined along with her motives in leadership. Differences based on gender are considered as a possible cause for variations in managerial styles. The quote “With great power comes great responsibility” has been used by many leaders and finds similarities with the mini case discussed.
Ho Ching is on Asia’s list of most powerful business people and Forbes’s list of most powerful women. Influence and power are closely related. Both try to achieve the end goal of controlling others to do the things you want them to do. Ching does have power and influence which tend to come from her position as chief executive officer of Temasek and her spouse’s position as prime minister of Singapore.
From the brief description in the mini case, a definitive method of power and influence is difficult to determine for Ho Ching. Her influence may come from people’s fear that if she wants something she just needs to ask her husband who is the most powerful man in Singapore. Since Singapore may operate with different standards of right and wrong than the United States people may be less willing to speak out and tell Ho Ching “no” for fear of reprisals. Besides having the power or influence of being associated with the prime minister, she does have other attributes such as a Stanford education, experience, and connections. She is intelligent as proven by becoming an electrical engineer. This education has provided a good basis for some of the skills a leader needs.
