Historical Development of Nursing Timeline

          The profession of nursing is unique they work in diverse settings, various fields, and are at the forefront of health care. Nursing is an art and science, recognized by several theorists, educators, and innovators dating back to the 1700s. The theories have evolved through time and are still in use in the current practice of nursing of the 21st century. Nursing focuses on the patient, but there are many additional aspects to nursing care. There are four concepts central to nursing: person or client (includes individuals, families, groups, and communities), environment (the internal and external surroundings that affect the client. This includes people in the physical environment, such as families, friends, and significant others), health (the degree of wellness or well-being that the client experiences, nursing (the attributes, characteristics, and the actions of the nurse providing care on behalf of, or in conjunction with, the client (Current Nursing, 2012).
In the examination of events in the nursing history discoveries will be recognized of the many facets of nursing and the impact on science, research, religion, education, and others. Nursing theory can be traced back to the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale (1860), the founder of modern nursing, however, it was not until 1960’s and 1970’s that there was even discussion of the theories for nursing. It was not until the 1980’s that the importance of a theory development in nursing was realized and the impact on nursing of today. This paper will review nursing theory, beginning with Florence Nightingale and continuing through to the 21st century, as it applies to nursing and other disciplines.
