Health and Safety

My understanding of the Laws and Legislations that I work within my role as a teaching assistant at xxxxx at my place of work we provide a safe and homely environment in a nursery and reception class with 3 members of staff and 25 children.
In our setting we work within a number of laws and legislations such as; Care Standards Act, Disability Act 1989, Health and Safety 1974, Food Hygiene Regulations 2006 etc..
The legislative framework for health, safety and risk management in the work setting is by “The health and Safety at Work Act 1974” and is the primary piece of legislation and is responsible for enforcing the act and a number of other acts relevant to the working environment. It also states that all staff are to take reasonable care of themselves and others around them and for their safety.   By following these acts within my setting I keep the children safe and those of the support staff.

In our organisation we must have a designated Health and Safety representative who will take the responsibility along with the teacher of monitoring and recording all records and reports, these include risk assessments.
One of our policies is the “Child Protection Policy” this policy is aimed at protecting the children and recognising the signs of abuse and to ensure all staff understand the correct procedures.   This is taken from the key principles on which to base work with children and families and they are found in “The Children Act 1989”, “Working Together to Safeguard Children NAfW 2000” and the “UN Convention on the Rights of the Child”   Stating that all children deserve the opportunity to achieve their full potential.   Each year as a staff member I have to attend a Child Protection workshop this year we have done the workshop on line and had various questions regarding children’s safety and development.   Copy of certificate attached.
