Part A – Sports Drink Analysis: Staminade
Staminade is a sports drink made in Australia by an Australian family owned company. Staminade first stepped onto the Australian market in the mid 1970’s, well before much larger competitors such as Powerade and Gatorade came around. Staminade is an electrolyte based sports drink, with lots of benefits, such as rehydration and replenishment of electrolytes. As staminade is an electrolyte based drink, the main function of staminade is to replenish the electrolytes, and to significantly decrease the risk of the consumer suffering from cramp, dehydration and fatigue. Below is a table outlining the amount of each of the nutrients you will receive per 250mL of the sports drink: staminade.

A kilojoule is the scientific name for the measurement of the amount of energy a portion of food or drink contains. A fully grown, adult male needs a whopping 8000kj a day, yet a single bottle of staminade only contains a miniscule 264kj. Staminade has intentionally done this so that the consumer can still rehydrate while not consuming a large amount of energy, which would most likely be consumed in a large meal later on in the day. If staminade contained a lot more kilojoules, the consumer would then have to work all that excess energy off.

Calories are also simply another form of energy measurement. However, it is the measurement of the potential amount of energy a single portion of food or drink might contain.

As shown in figure 1.1 above, staminade contains approximately 0grams of protein per serve, and therefore is utilised most effectively by athletes who are competing in long endurance events such as a 10km run or a 20km bike ride, and by professional athletes who compete in sports such as AFL or Soccer.
