Question 1: Explain the function of assessments in learning and development:

There are loads of reasons to assess such as:
• Determining level of knowledge & understanding
• Ensuring that learning is taking place
• Checking progress
• Adhering to course criteria
Assessment can take part at different stages in Learning and Development and can sometimes be overlook. Assessments are designed to check ability of all learners and hopefully pick up if a leaner is struggling or exceeding.
Formative assessments are a continuous practice used to provide feedback to the learner’s level, it makes the learner aware of the current achievement as well as assessor/course deliverer being able to self asses their role as an assessor as to the effectiveness of their teaching to that particular learner. If you was to deliver a training session/course and you did not assess, how could you be sure that any learning has taken place? Or if you are trying to work out a person’s level of skill in a particular area, how would you determine if their skill level is poor, moderate or exceptional without assessment.
An Initial assessment would take place before the course/qualification to make sure the learner is right to be placed on the course. Initial assessment gives information about the learner’s current level of ability and helps plan for future learning.
If you have just delivered a training session and you don’t assess, how can you be sure that any learning has taken place?   Or if you are trying to work out a person’s level of skill in a particular area, how would you know whether their skill level is poor, moderate or exceptional without assessment?
