Who Is Hamlet?
Hamlet is a prince of Denmark who is at the age of university. He goes to university with his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern . Hamlet is troubled in his mind because of the recent death of his father, King Hamlet. He is distraught about the death of his father but is possibly driven to madness with the knowledge that his uncle, Claudius who hastily married Hamlets mother was the perpetrator of the crime of killing King Hamlet. The ghost of king Hamlet appears to Hamlet to inform him of this fact and gives Hamlet the task of avenging his death. This would involve committing regicide because he would have to murder Claudius who has become king through the marriage of Gertrude.
Hamlet is partly be involved in a relationship with Ophelia, the daughter of an advisor to the king Hamlet and Claudius. Hamlet appears to be deeply in love with her but during the events of the play seems to grow less interested in her until her death where he shows remaining compassion. During the events of the play there is a scene with Hamlet and Ophelia where he says “Take thee to a nunnery”. This could have two meanings. The first possible meaning is that the nunnery is representative of a place where there are nuns and religious people. This could be implying that he thinks Ophelia needs to be cleansed by Christianity. The other possible meaning is that the nunnery is a brothel. This would mean that Ophelia would be having sexual relations to anyone who paid for her. This could be Hamlet comparing her to his mother Gertrude for marrying Claudius three months after King Hamlet died.
Hamlet’s mental state is questionable throughout the play as after the information about Claudius’ actions are clear to him. He appears to be driven into madness by the events of the play but continues to seek to avenge his father’s death. This makes him a quite ambiguous character to have as the protagonist.
