UNIT NUMBER-SHC 31

Understanding why effective communication is important in the work setting.

Introduction
I work at a Montessori Nursery and the age group that I work with is 2 - 5 year olds. I have worked here for two years and found that one of the most important elements of my role is knowing how to communicate effectively.
> There are many different ways to communicate; talking, listening, the use of body language and facial expression in a way that is clear. I am aware of the fact that good communication with children helps them to understand what is expected of them and also helps them learn how to be good communicators.
> In this assignment I will be looking at the reasons why we communicate and how communication affects relationships in settings.
> 1.1 Identify the different reasons people communicate.

> 1.1.1 There are many forms of communication; nonverbal, visual, oral and written.
We communicate in different ways depending on the situation, using communication to check we have someone’s attention, give people information and to show that we understand.
We communicate to;
listen to what other people are saying,
develop learning
encourage others to respond and to get to know each other.
>1.1.2   When communicating with children is important to do this clearly through allowing them to ask questions, offering them ideas and taking into consideration their body language as not all children are verbal communicators.
> As practitioners it is important that we actively listen and respond to children as through communication we can engage with the children, build on their social skills and gain a better understanding of their individual needs.
> Good communication is seen when we:
> -show positive facial expression
> -recast young children's language
> -expand children's statements
> -make sure you are at the same eye level
> -be interested and ask questions
> -look for opportunities for sustained conversation.
