1. On   page 139, in Cockerham, there are three rationales used to explain the relationship between social class and mental illness. Apply each rationale as an explanation for the mental illnesses and issues addressed in the movie. Which do you believe is most accurate? Explain your choice using information provided from texts and materials in this class. The first rationale is the GENETIC explanation , shown to be a result of genetic inheritance , and said to have more predisposition towards mental disorder among the lower classes.This rationale could be valid for Claudia , in that psychological and social factors are said to trigger the symptoms. Second is the SOCIAL CAUSATION rationale.This is where the lower class have more stress and adversity , due to deprivation in their lives. Third is the SOCIAL SELECTION explanation, whereby there is more mental disorder among the lower class because mentally ill people tend to drift downward in the social structure. I believe the most accurate rationale for Claudia is the social causation rationale, because she was subjected to much stress and adversity in her life as a young girl , and up to age 16, by her Mother and stepfather, who abused her sexually.
