Outline the Role of a Social Worker in Today’s Society, with Reference to the Importance of Set Professional Values

In today’s life part of the distinctive nature of social work is its claim to a value base that treats people as individuals; being non-judgmental, valuing diversity and having commitment to social justice by promoting anti-discriminatory practice, maintaining confidentiality of information, promoting and supporting individual rights. This care value base is a set of rules and guidelines that every care practitioner has to follow in order to provide services to their clients. Social workers’ primary focus is to help people in need and to address social problems. They rely on their knowledge, values, and skills to empower the victims to either develop or keep their independence. Many of them have personal drive or motivation, rooted in their own life experiences. Social workers investigate social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and victimised individuals and groups of people. Their social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice. These activities pursue to promote sensitivity and knowledge about ethnic and cultural diversity. The social work profession seek to strengthen relationships among people in a purposeful effort to promote, enhance, maintain, and restore the well-being of individuals, families, social groups, organizations, and communities. One of the most significant social work case was the death of Victoria Climbie in February 2000, when she died having 128 injuries on her body after months of abuse by her grant aunt and her boyfriend. Despite that she was taken to hospital twice, and she came in contact with the police, and social workers on several occasions, the abuse was not discovered until her death.
