Fire protection systems are categorized depending on the situation in which they are applied. Many individuals and organizations invest in active fire protection systems such as fire extinguishers and sprinklers (FM Global Group, 2013). Devices or systems used in fire protection are aimed at ensuring there is fire safety.   Passive fire protection involves the process of specifying and installing of systems providing passive fire protection. These are composed of various components used in sealing openings in walls and floors. The walls or floors are then made fire-resistant as the openings are filled with fire-resistant materials.
Firestops are important installations that can be used to reduce kitchen fires. They are placed 27-35 inches above cooking surfaces. Various components are used in the sealing of joints and openings found on walls or the floor. Such components include intumescent materials and sealants. Intumescent materials expand when exposed to flames or heat depending on the specified extreme temperature.   Sealants have various uses in construction projects but in fire protection, they are used in sealing openings on walls and floors. They come in various forms including solvent-based products, silicone and latex (Stahl, 2013).
Firestops designs help restore fire-resistance ratings. The materials used help ensure fire does not spread to other places. In cases of unprotected openings, fire-resistance is compromised allowing faster spread of fire. When automatic fire suppressors are used, kitchen fire rates are likely to reduce with time. Eventually, installation of firestops will help in reducing house-fires. Installation of fire protection systems should be promoted to help cut down on damages that come about because of fire (FM Global Group, 2013).
In conclusion, fire protection systems help avoid losses incurred because of fire. Many constructors advice on the installation of fire...
