0.1 Objective
Aim of this experiment was to grow a Staphylococcus warneri culture in a 2 L or 10 L fermenter and to compare the growth kinetics and production of antimicrobial peptide of both bioreactor cultures. Bacteriocin activity was assayed using the agar diffusion bioassay.

0.2 Background Theory
0.2.1 Fermentation
Fermentation is usually applied for the production of biomass, microbial metabolites, microbial enzymes and recombinant products as well as the modification of compounds added to a fermentation process in transformation processes. In order to meet the objective of an optimised yield in a production process, product formation needs to be improved, which is achieved by the optimisation of culture conditions and the genetic modification of the producer cells. With the production of therapeutic agents from microbial origin becoming increasingly important for industry so do studies of the upscaling of bioprocesses in process-development and -optimisation.[Stanbury, 1998]

0.2.2 Bacteriocins
Bacteriocines are antimicrobial toxins produced by bacteria.[Jack et al., 1995] It has been suggested to call them BLIS, "bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances" describing an extracellular bacterial peptide which is secreted at a...
