Introduction and Chapter 1:The Collision of Cultures . Native societies of the western hemisphere before the arrival of Europeans; Europe and factors leading to exploration; Columbus and the Age of Discovery; the conquest of native civilizations and founding of colonial empires by European powers. Chapter 2: Transplantations and Borderlands. The competition for colonies in North America; motives and background to founding England's colonies in the South, New England, and Middle Atlantic regions. Chapter 3: Society and Culture in Provincial America. The development of the colonial society and economy in British North American; comparisons between the traits of the northern colonies and the southern colonies.
Chapter 3 (continued). The expansion of slavery, trends in religion, economic and population growth patterns in the American colonies during the 1700s.
