Winners and Losers on City Road
This purpose of this assignment is to look at some of the winners and losers of City Road. Winners and losers can be looked at in different ways whether it is an owner of a successful business, or the way the bollards and road markings such as the use of red tarmac on City Road help keep the street moving. When looking at losers it could be someone whose business has suffered due to changes on the street or it could be people who have bad experiences of the street and feel they can no longer use it as and when they wish due to inequalities such as their age or gender.
This essay will be focusing on three examples of winners and losers on City Road Taste Buds Café, the gentlemen who visit the Municipal club and Nof the owner of The Hawaiian and Mezza Luna restaurants.
Taste Buds café shown in (‘Making Social Lives’, 2009, Scene 3) could be defined as a winner as they have created a community like feel in their café. The owner who is Spanish sells a variety of foods from all over the world catering for a large number of clientele through his friendly staff and fresh homemade produce he has attracted local people from the older generation who meet here with friends regularly for lunch and coffee. When talking to some of the ladies visiting there in scene 3 they say how they like that everything is made fresh for them and one lady says she does not like coffee that much but goes there as it is friendly and welcoming. The café is maintaining and repairing society through providing a safe, welcoming and friendly environment which brings a sense of community spirit to City Road to people who otherwise may feel they had nowhere to go.
When looking at losers on City Road you could look at the newsagents Autotrader on City Road which has lost business due to Tesco opening close by or another way to look at losers are people who feel they’re unable to use City Road due to an inequality such as age or gender. ‘The gentlemen in the Municipal...
