Who Inspires Me

Who Inspires You?

As a child, I always thought of my mother as a super hero.   I believed that she could fix every problem and cure everyone.   My mom always approached every little problem in a calm and caring manner.   My mother was born on December 27, 1957.   She is one of five children.   My mom was a straight A student all through school.   All of her siblings and her went to college.   My mother then became a registered nurse and joined the military.   While stationed in El Paso, she worked in the Orthopedic Ward for a year and a half.   Then, my mom moved from the Orthopedic Ward to the Neonatal Intensive care Unit where she worked with premature babies.   In 1983, she was transferred to the United States Army Intensive Care Nursing course and later graduated with high honors.   Later that year, my mother went from being a second lieutenant to a first lieutenant.   The following year, she moved to San Antonio to work at the Brooke Army Medical Center.   She was assigned as a nurse in the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, the burn unit.   She was active duty until 1986. She then worked with the U.S. Army Reserves. She completed a Masters Degree in Nursing in 1993.   While working at BAMC, she met my father.   He was also a registered nurse there.   They were friends for a few years and dated for about two years before they were married.   My mother was thirty-five and my father was forty-one when they got married.   Two years later, they had me.   My mother was working for Humana at the time and continued to work there for many years.   After a while, of working in Quality Improvement, she started to miss bedside care and moved to a position at the VA Hospital.   My mother has worked at the VA Hospital ever since.   She has been a registered nurse for thirty years and is currently working in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.   My mother has had a very successful career and I hope that I will have a job that I love as much as my mom loves hers.   Even though she loves her...
