Unit 501 Use and develop systems that promote communication (SHC51)
1.1 Review the range of groups and individuals whose communication needs must be addressed in own job role
It is an integral part of my role as a Support Coordinator in a supported housing scheme for adults with mental health issues, to communicate with a wide range of groups and individuals. These include one member of staff, trustees, service users, family members, potential applicants for accommodation, managers and support workers in other supported housing schemes, social workers, community psychiatric nurses, health workers, supporting people team and housing team. I communicate with all of these people in writing and verbally and also by listening.
I have to utilise different skills when communicating with the different individuals mentioned to ensure I am understood. I always verbally communicate with the service users judging on their level of understanding and have to be mindful of their frame of mind at the time due to their mental health. I have to ensure the language I am using is clear and precise; this is to ensure that I am not misunderstood or what I am saying is misinterpreted, as if this was to occur it could have implications in their mental health. I ensure staff and I understand how to be assertive, sensitive and able to respond appropriately to different behaviour for example anger issues. I have been on mental health first aid training which promoted the understanding in my practice to take into consideration the individual’s ability to communicate and enabled me to reflect and alter any communication I have with those who may find it difficult to communicate effectively with others.
When I am communicating with member of staff I manage   I need to know she understands my instructions, and carries out the duties that I request of her, this also has to be communicated with a mutual air of respect to ensure is happy to carry out the tasks I have requested of her. It is also...
