Unit 5, Supporting Teaching and Learning

To assist the head teacher and class teacher, help pupils to achieve their full learning potential. This role will involve access to sensitive and confidential records, and we have to keep all matters relating to the school and children to ourselves. Under the guidance of the class teacher to develop, maintain and apply knowledge and understanding of pupils learning needs. Ensure that support is given to them at a level they will understand. Learning support is delivered individually and in groups through a range of tasks i.e. literacy, numeracy tasks, and to help children to understand the instructions by talking and explaining them. Support areas that need improvement, both academic and social. Work with pupils in ICT and other specialist equipment that is needed to enhance their learning. Motivate and encourage the children to concentrate and to fulfil the tasks they have been set. Undertake learning activities with pupils of varying abilities to ensure differentiation and access to the curriculum. Seek to ensure the promotion and reinforcement of pupil’s self-esteem, appropriate levels of effort, behaviour and to guide pupils to become independent learners. Contribute to the assessment of pupils learning, in particular literacy, numeracy, science and ICT skills. Contribute to the implementation of the national and/or foundation curriculum and specific individual pupil targets. Assist teaching staff in the development of learning strategies, with the provision of teaching and learning resources and in the preparation and maintenance of a safe, secure and suitable learning environment. Assist in the development, monitoring and evaluation of programmes of work. To upkeep data files, catalogue resources, maintain inventories, photocopy, and use I.T. systems for administration and educational purposes.
