Amongst others the ‘Health and Safety at Work ACT 1974’ lays done much of the legislative framework for health, safety, and risk management in residential childcare settings. Key points include:

Buildings should be well maintained and designed with safety in mind for the users.
The environment should be clean and safe.
Equipment must be used and stored correctly.
All practises must promote the health and safety of the children.
The workplace should be safe and not pose a risk to.
Safe systems of work must be in place.
Adequate welfare facilities must be available.
Appropriate and full training, information, and supervision must be implemented.
Protective clothing must be provided and worn where appropriate.
Relevant information must be reported to the health and safety executive.
First aid resources and facilities must be provided.
