Unit 303: Principles of diversity, equality and inclusion in adult social care setting.

1.1 Explain what is meant by Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Discrimination.
The term Diversity means difference. When we use diversity as a contrast or an addition to equality it is then about recognising individual as well as group differences. Treating people as individuals and placing positive values on diversity in the community & workplace. We must take into account the differences in everyone & value the different perspectives, ways & approaches that different people bring. Diversity is recognising that each individual has characteristics that shape their unique identity. It describes the range of differences that exist between people, some obvious & some not. These can include factors such as age, gender, background, ethnicity, religion, disabilities, personality & lifestyle. By being open to these differences we create a more productive environment where everybody is valued and utilises the different talents & skills each individual has to offer.
Equality is about ‘creating a fairer society where everyone can participate & has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.’ Identifying patterns of experience based on the individual. Equality treats people in the ways that are appropriate to the individual’s needs. Using positive actions and never positive discrimination. Ensuring each individual has equal rights regardless of race, age, gender, disabilities or sexuality.
Inclusion is a universal human right. The aim of inclusion is to embrace all people, irrelevant of race, age, gender, medical or other needs. Giving equal access and opportunities, ridding us of discrimination and intolerance. Inclusion affects us in all aspects of our public, professional & personal lives.
