Unit 3- Introduction to Equality and Inclusion in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young People’s Settings
1.1 Explain what is meant by:

– Equality- means to treat people that helps them and to not treat everyone in the same way, for example if you have three patients, one has a leg ulcer, one has a sore throat, and one has a cold, you would treat them differently as that is what their needs are, and not treating them for the same problem, like giving them all instructions to have anti-biotic’s for the cold, as they are not all suffering from that problem.
– Inclusion- this is giving people all the same opportunities, for example, you have two patients that are suffering depression you would normally give them give them all the different opportunities, instead of saying to one of them “you are young just take the medication and you will be fine” and then saying to the other patient “here are the different opportunities that you have for us to help you with your depression…”, doing that is not giving the same opportunities to everyone, it is not being inclusive.
– Discrimination- Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of an individual based on their membership in a certain group or category. For example if you treat someone different because they are in a wheel chair, than if they were able- bodied, then you are discriminating them.
