Understanding Teaching Role and Responsibilities in Education and Training
1.1 Explain the teaching role and responsibilities in education and training.
A teacher’s roles and responsibilities are to teach in an engaging manner, using a variety of teaching methods to motivate and encourage learners to want to know more.
Table 1 (Appendix 1) provides a comprehensive list of the roles of a teacher.
It is through our understanding of these roles and responsibilities that we can directly link to the training cycle.
All aspects of the training cycle are essential; here I will look at each phase in more detail.
Identifying needs:
These are a combination of organisational needs, teacher needs and the needs of each learner.
Organisational needs: may come from a community organisation such as Telford and Wrekin Council requesting a creative programme that addresses a particular subject. For example “health and wellbeing”
Teacher needs: relate to having an appropriate venue to teach from, sufficient resources, and equipment, and the opportunity to liaise with colleagues and support staff in order to perform effectively.
Individual learner needs: should be established at the initial stages where they are interviewed informally to establish their level of ability and suitability. Individual learning plans can be implemented to ensure learners can progress on to the next level.
Planning learning: using a variety of teaching methods and resources relevant to your specialist subject. Gaining feedback from colleagues and learners to make improvements.
Facilitating learning: using interesting resources by means of quality handouts, presentations, talks and demonstrations. Obtaining feedback in order to make adjustments.
Assessing learning: to observe that learners have understood your teaching at all stages, and gained the necessary skills to successfully complete objectives whilst with you. Use formal and informal assessment techniques to establish...
