The Style of Leadership

The style of leadership is particularly important for organizations and employees, because it can affect the behaviors and responses of employees, ultimately the performance of organization. Previous organizational research had pointed out that the variance of organizational success can be explained by leadership with large percent, more than forty percent (Bass, 1990). Meanwhile, leadership was treated as the force mobilizing the employees towards organizations’ goals (Yukl, 1998). In this article, different leadership styles of the management team members in FridgeCom will be identified, including Mike, Veronica, Terry, Sandy and Doug. In addition, the potential responses and behaviors of employees will also be discussed under different leadership styles. Lastly, based on the analysis, some recommendations will be provided to the managerial members of FridgeCom correspondingly. All these efforts would be beneficial to solve the current problems of FridgeCom.

Before identifying the leadership styles of each main leader in FridgeCom, the definition of leadership style should be made clear of. Leadership style is very important, and discussions on different types of effective leadership have long been significant to both theory and practice (House et al., 2004). There are various kinds of definitions about leadership style, for example, Mosadeghrad viewed leadership style as a series of managerial characteristics, behaviors, attitudes and skills that based upon individual or organizational values, interests and reliability of employees in different contexts (Mosadeghrad, 2003); Mullins defined leadership style as “the way in which the functions of leadership are carried out, the way in which the manager typically behaves towards members of the group” (Mullins, 2010, p. 380).
