The Curious Incident

Shakespeare once said “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” This of course is referring to leadership, but it relates to mythological heroes as well. Heroes are also known as the protagonists who show courage throughout different mythologies and they pursue the essential stages of life in similar ways. They tend to have a protected youth, then go on a special journey and then overcome one or more obstacles. These all are important characteristics of a hero’s life.  The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time’s protagonist Christopher Boone has Asperger’s Syndrome which makes him experience life through a different perspective. He has a protected environment in his youth, he then goes on a special journey to live with his mother and he struggles to overcome his disability. Christopher is different from other teenagers but he fits the mold of a mythological hero.
      Christopher’s childhood was sheltered due to his special needs, similar to the way a protagonist’s is. He is overjoyed for the way he is treated by the people around him. Christopher’s father keeps him in a safe & secured environment. His father protects him from all dangers of the outside world. His father shows affection towards him and accepts him the way he is. He understands Christopher and guides him to the right path. His constant support is obvious through passages such as “I love you very much, Christopher. Don’t ever forget that. And I know I lose my rag occasionally. I know I get angry. I know I shout. And I know I shouldn’t. But I only do it because I worry about you, because I don’t want to see you getting into trouble, because I don’t want you to get hurt. Do you understand?” (Pg86) Such conversations with his father help him to be able to rely and trust him. Christopher doesn’t have any responsibilities like other teenagers.
