People
 often
 have
 varying
 perceptions
 of
 health
 and
 physical
 activity
 based
 on
 their

social
 circumstances
 both
 past
 and
 present,
 as
 well
 as
 their
 ways
 of
 interpreting,

interrelating
 and
 interacting
 with
 the
 sociocultural
 and
 economic
 determinants
 of
 their

environment;
 therefore
 limiting
 their
 opportunity
 to
 improve
 their
 health.

Sociocultural
 determinants
 of
 health
 relates
 to
 the
 society
 in
 which
 people
 live
 and

cultural
 practices
 and
 expectations
 demonstrated
 by
 the
 media,
 culture,
 religion,
 families

and
 peers
 in
 their
 community.

The
 media
 can
 often
 have
 both
 a
 positive
 and
 negative
 influence
 on
 one’s
 perception
 of

their
 health
 by
 repeatedly
 generating
 images
 that
 often
 glamourize
 negative
 health

behaviors
 and
 trends,
 e.g.
 anorexia,
 drinking
 amongst
 the
 youth,
 advertising
 fast
 food

outlets,
 body
 image,
 etc.
 Although
 at
 the
 same
 time
 the
 media
 displays
 the
 importance
 of

fitness
 and
 physical
 activity
 as
 well
 as
 promoting
 healthy
 habits,
 e.g.
 exercising,
 eating

balanced
 diets
 and
 easier
 ways
 to
 quit
 smoking.

Culture
 can
 also
 be
 an
 influencing
 factor
 of
 how
 people
 interpret
 the
 meaning
 of
 health;

this
 could
 be
 a
 national
 culture...
