The discovery evoked by wonder is made of individuality against conformity in Late Ferryby an individual immersing himself into the unknown. Motifs of light and darkness are used to create contrast between the familiar and the unknown. Bright imagery such as “silver blizzard of light”, symbolising familiarity, is contrasted with the simile, “longer white light/ feel nervously about in the blackness/ …like hands/ after the switch light”, symbolising desire to escape uncertainty.
