Unit 2 – Promote child and young person development. (Covers elements unit 2 – 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 5.2 6.1) When a child starts at our setting the parent/carers are given a welcoming pack that includes a brief description of the EYFS and ECM and a consent form for them to sign giving permission for us to observe and take photographs of their children. The parents/carers are also given an explanation of why we need to observe their child when their child comes for their taster session. My role as a child care practitioner and key person in assessing and profiling a child’s development is to observe and assess my key children producing formative and summative assessments. I am then involved in the individual planning for each child and comparing their actual stage of development to the expected norms i.e. EYFS Profile. I do this in accordance with our settings policy. It is necessary to observe and assess the children so as to detect any delays in a child’s development and acting on these appropriately i.e. reporting in the first instance to my manager or deputy manager. Parents are mostly happy to have their children observed but these observations must be stored carefully and only discussed with colleagues or other professionals. Each of my key children has their own file where their observations and photographs are kept in a box and are not left out on display. Each key person has a basket where other children’s observations can be placed. The parents/carers can at anytime ask to see their own child’s file. The observations I make on my key children along with photographs and parent notes are recorded in their learning journals, and I can show this record to any relevant people so they can see how each child is progressing or not progressing. I have a key child with ASD and my observations are shown to the parents, health visitor, LEA, child psychologist SALT and portage.
