The Odyssey, written by Homer, tells the story of Odysseus and his adventures after the Trojan War. During Odysseus’ travel, he became aware of the fact that he was going to be forced to sail near the island of the Sirens. The Sirens were sea nymphs who lured sailors with their songs. When the sailors heard their songs, they forgot all about their wives, children, and anything they held dear. Then, the sailors would jump overboard, their ships would crash, and the sailor’s bodies would thrown across the rocks. Pornography is today’s siren song. Its lyrics promise forbidden love, hidden knowledge of sexuality, and unimagined ecstasy. Pornography is said to be one of the leading causes of family problems because many men, women, and children end up shipwrecked with broken lives, and broken relationships.
When a viewer becomes addicted to pornography, he or she will sooner or later no longer get a thrill from viewing the porn. The viewer will decide to begin acting out his or her fantasies to receive the excitement he or she once received from viewing pornography. The pornography has shown to be destructive to one’s beliefs and attitudes.
Donald Wildom of the American Family Association, stated that pornography has many diverse effects on people. It causes the person to maintain a sexual interest and provides fantasy material which is later reenacted in real life. It also dehumanizes women, reduces sex to a product, and causes the observer to show aggression towards women and children. The worst effect porn has on its viewers is that it causes men to be less inhibited about committing rape.
Pornography serves as a sexual manual for consumers. The viewers are led to believe that the way women are being treated in the film is the way all women want to be treated in real life.
