Paradox of Democracy

Does civilization really mean only to ‘enjoy’ the so called freedom without sense of responsibility ignoring the law of the land and should this be the attitude of the ‘freed’ citizens then, either the freedom was untimely bestowed upon them or it would not be improper to say that they are still unfit for the Democratic liberty. The citizens are at times heard boasting unashamedly of their deeds of breaking law and order and some of the so called leaders of the Democratic set up are seen patting their backs as if a job of chivalry was accomplished. In the present Democratic arrangement, being a strong arm (Dabang) with proven record of visits to the prison has become prequalification for stepping in to the arena of politics.
It is very painfully recollected that in the year 1996 local University elections were held in which Mr. xxxx was also a contestant like many others. This fellow had more than one criminal cases registered against him(and some cases were for heinous crimes well known to many including me!) while, he was enrolled in the University unquestioned. As mentioned earlier that the University elections are sponsored by the political parties, this person was also nominated and sponsored by a political party leading in the state which spent huge money and all the means for the victory of their candidate and when came the poll results, as expected, he was winner. Mr. xxxx, basically enrolled in University was reckoned as potential leader (with his above mentioned qualification) of that political party and he also started behaving as if a member of the state legislative assembly. And very soon the assembly elections were declared and as expected Mr. xxxx   filed his nomination under the banner of the same party who had sponsored his candidature for the University elections.
