Not only is physical neglect a form of abuse but so is neglecting the needs of a person to be stimulated, involved respected and to be able to contribute to the society and community around them’ (Stephen Ladyman) - Critically consider this statement in relation to social work practice with older people.



The aim of this essay is to show that not only is physical neglect a form of abuse but so is neglecting the needs of a person to be stimulated, involved respected and to be able to contribute to the society and community around them, it will consider this statement in relation to social work practice with older people, it will look at the assessment process of a vulnerable older person and also the definition of a vulnerable adult and different forms of abuse. This essay will also show an example of neglect in which the service user suffered.

Abuse is a breach of a person’s rights, which could be a one off occurrence or an act   repeated over a length of time. Abuse can be deliberate or may occur as a result of poor care practice or ignorance. A vulnerable or older person may be neglected, taken advantage of because they do not understand the consequences of their actions or persuaded to agree to something against their will. Abuse can take on many forms the most recognized is physical abuse sexual abuse, however psychological abuse, neglect and discrimination are all forms of abuse only they are not physical as no form of personal contact is involved or visible evidence to be seen. Psychological abuse also known as emotional abuse takes place through being sworn and shouted at as well being threatened. Abuse through neglect is caused when medical or physical care needs are ignored either intentionally or unintentionally by failing to understand or meet the care needs of a vulnerable or older person.
