1.1 Explain the functions of assessment in learning and development

Assessment is the process by which evidence of candidates attainment is evaluated against agreed criteria in order to provide the evidence for a qualification. Assessment is carried out to enable individuals to meet the standards for their employment, and gain recognition and qualifications for their work. Assessment also measures an individuals progress within their area of employment against specific standards and criteria as set out by the National Occupational Standards agency. These standards and criteria set out what an individual in a working environment is expected to do in terms of performance criteria, their range and corresponding underpinning knowledge. The outcome of which leads them to progress in their area of employment, improving their confidence and skills which in turn leads them to gaining their qualification.



Define the key concepts and principles of assessment

Assessment should always be fair, unbiased and equal, consisting of valid work produced by the candidate. This reliably reflects the levels of performance demonstrated by them. Competence should be demonstrated at the same level of skill, knowledge and understanding that exists at the time of assessment. And that all criteria are met sufficiently. The assessor is responsible for ensuring that the assessment methods used do not put unnecessary demands on the candidate or their employers, and that any methods used to assess are safe for them. The type of method used to assess candidates should depend on their personal circumstances, their job role and the unit that they are doing at the time. Assessment should always be fair, unbiased and equal, taking into account the following:
