Legalizing Sports Gambling
This last Super Bowl featuring the New Orleans Saints, and the Indianapolis Colts, lasted around 3 hours. During the three hours it was estimated that 90 million dollars was invested in illegal sports gambling. Ranging from bets made in the office, bars, and between friends. I believe that the United States government should legalize and control sports gambling. With this, the government will tax the winnings made by the people, and with the profit earned will help lower the national debt of the government. By legalizing sport gambling we can help create jobs and generate a surplus for many states throughout the United States.
Delaware is one of the first States to legalize sports gambling. When Delaware made betting legal it had an 800 million dollar budget deficit. With this, the governor, Jack Markell is hoping to bring in 50 million dollars in the first year alone. Less thrilled are the NFL and the NCAA, who both lobbied against the bill. After the vote passed, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail: "We expect that everyone involved in the administration of sports leagues professional and amateur will review today's action and evaluate its impact as other decisions are made by Delaware officials and the Delaware Supreme Court." News Journal, the NFL already has filed a legal brief with the state Supreme Court, arguing that games cannot be considered a situation of chance because skill plays a role. So while we may be able to bring in a huge profit for the states the professional sport leagues disagree with Delaware and are threatening to even stop showing games in Delaware and every state that follows.
