Should immigration policies be changed in Australia?

Good morning everyone, today I will be presenting my oral on the subject of immigration in Australia. This is an issue that directly affects us and how we live our everyday lives. Hundreds of thousands migrate to Australia every year putting pressure on our roads, resources for water and electricity, public transport systems and so on,   all leading to a change in our immigration policy which is expected to come effective on the 1st of July, 2012. This new migration program will give out no more than 185,000 permanent visas mainly focusing on skilled applicants. This new program is more common sense than anything and it’s pretty simple to explain why it was put together. Australia is an ageing population, if we stopped migration completely, the population would still grow by 1.1million over 10 years from natural growth, but the numbers of working age would rise by only 21,000 because the numbers aged 65 and over would rise by 944,000.   Australians are already among the highest tax payers in the world with an approximate of 30% of wages being taxed, the last thing we would want is to pay more tax to support the pension for the retired. With the large number of immigrants, we have seen in the past a large number of those who are satisfied with Australia’s welfare support system. By saying this I’m referring to those who are happy to live off social security payments provided by us, the taxpayers. Less educated immigrants are believed to increase crime in areas of theft and violence, proven to be a curse in a nation’s economy and social welfare. I think it’s time we make some changes and this migration policy will allow us to move in the right direction. Australia will finally be able to bring qualified English speaking migrants with the skills we need to build our economy and infrastructure to be able to support a larger population without a decrease in our standard of living. Thank you...
