Issues and Traditions in Western Religions Paper
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are three well known religions. A religion relies on specific system of belief, rituals, code of conduct, and philosophy of life. A religion is characterized by faith and a way of worshipping God, usually expressed through its believer’s behavior. This paper will identify and summarize the top two current issues facing each of these religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This paper will also identify two sacred holidays for each religion and provide the significance and major characteristics of each holiday.
Judaism
Judaism is the religious beliefs and practices and the way of life of the Jews. Just like any other religions, Judaism and its believers are facing issues; among these issues, anti-Semitism is one current that deserve to be talk about.
Anti-Semitism has existed for many years, and has spread in non Jewish communities. Anti-Semitism is “discrimination, hostility or prejudice directed at Jewish persons as a religious, racial, or ethnic group. Instances of anti-Semitism range from individual hatred to institutionalized, violent persecution. Extreme instances of persecution include the Spanish Inquisition, eviction from Spain, various pogroms, and, above all, Adolf Hitler's Holocaust (Religious Tolerance, 2006). The recent Palestinian attacks against Israel and the continuous threats against Jewish places of worship are recent examples of anti-Semitism (Anti-Defamation League 2007). Another current issue the Jews are facing today is the ongoing controversy about the life of Jesus and the charge that the Jews were responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Christianity
Christianity is Christian’s religion. Christians believe in Jesus as the son of God and their philosophy of life is based on Jesus Christ teachings. With over 2 billion adherents in estimation, Christianity is the world's largest religion (Encyclopedia of the Orient, 2006). Christians are all...
