Write an essay that outlines the view that consumer society is a divided society.

Consumer society is one that is defined as much by how and what people purchase, as what they make or do. Consumption has become a centre of modern society, but not everybody has the same access to it. This creates many social divisions and inequalities. For consumers, the main division will be created by income, but age and disability also play a large role in the way we consume. In order to explore the statement, I shall draw on Bauman’s theory of ‘the seduced’ and ‘the repressed’ (Bauman, cited in Hetherington, 2009), Jackson’s study of retail parks (Jackson, cited in Hetherington, 2009, p.45) and an issue of recycling (Vivienne Brown, 2009). I shall explore the idea that consumption creates inequalities and divides society into different groups.
