Thematic Statement: I will in form the class about Sickle Cell Disease; including, where it is commonly found, what it is, and how it was first diagnosed.

I.           Introduction: Good morning, I’m Mia
      A.     Attention: and I like eggs
      B.     Credibility Statement: I have been living with Sickle Cell Disease my entire
life.
      C.     Thematic Statement: (Preview of main points) Today I will inform you
about Sickle Cell Disease; including, where it is commonly found, what it is,
and how it was first diagnosed.
II.           Body
      A.   Main Point: A lot of people think Sickle Cell is only found in Africa.
            1.         Support material: In fact that is a stereotype. Sickle cell affects people
all over the world.
            2.         Support material: People who live in countries where malaria is
present are commonly diagnosed with the disease.
            3.         Support material: These countries include the northern regions of
South America, the West Indies, Africa, Europe, and the western region of
Asia.
(Transition/signpost) Knowing where the disease comes from is a big part of knowing what it is.
      B.   Main Point: Many scientists say that sickle cell disease developed as the
body’s defense mechanism against malaria.
            1.       Support material: In a way this is a blessing and a curse, meaning
those who inherited the sickle cell gene do not get malaria.
            2.       Support material: However, sickle cell disease disables the proper
amount of oxygen needed to make new red blood cells, mutating them into
“sickles”.
            3.       Support material: But wait, that’s not all. The mutated cells become
rough, sticky, and block blood flow causing extreme pain and a slew of other
problems.
