Discriminatory Practice in Health and Social Care

In this assignment I will be writing an essay to describe discriminatory practise in health and social care for P2. For P3 I will then be describing the potential effects on those who use health and social care services. Finally for M1, I will write 3 case studies to assess the effects on those using the service of three different discriminatory practices in a Health and Social Care setting.
The definition of Marginalisation is the process whereby someone is pushed to the edge of a group and accorded lesser importance. An example of this is when there is a male and a female in a residential home and the carer chooses not to listen to the needs and the desires of the woman but is attending to the male service user. This will then make the women feel less than what she is and it will make her feel alone and marginalised from the community.
The definition of Disempowerment is to deprive an individual of power authority or influence. Disempowerment in the health and social care setting means taking away the rights of the individual to make their own decisions. This can be done through the withholding of information or directly making a decision for someone without their consent. This will make the individual feel that they have no say in anything and that they are worthless.
The definition of low self-esteem is feeling unworthy, incapable and incompetent. Low self-esteem is an individual’s self-worth. An example of this is an individual who is upset is getting make fun of and getting teased. This will lower the individual’s self-esteem more than it may already be. It will make the person feel bad about themselves and it may also lead to depression and other health issues if it carries on.
