Hawthorne Experiments

Now I will talk about “ howthorne experiments ”
There are 5 experiments.
The first one is illumination studies (1924 – 2927)
There was evidence that better lighting of the work place improve worker. Therefore General electric – a major manufacturers of light bulbs wanted to validate this finding to sell more light bulbs, especially to businesses. So they funded the National Research Council of the National   Academy of Sciences cooperate with engineers from MIT   to conduct a study about the evidence.

2 groups of women were chosen. 1 is control group, 1 is experiment group. However, the study fail to find any relationship between light intensity of work place and worker efficiency

The second is Relay assembly test room experiments (1927- 1929)
The National research council conduct these experiments, so a experimental group was established of 5 young women from Relay Assembly room of the plant .

The experiments involved the manipulation of a number of factors: pay incentives, length of workday and workweek and use of rest period to measure impact on productivity
They found that there was little effect on productivity

Mica- splitting test group (1928- 1930)
The second experiment was conducted to look the relationship above.   Only workers in the Mica- splitting room were chosen
But in this experiment, they kept wages held constant, work conditions were varied
They find that productivity increase 15 %. Therefore, they conclude that productivity was affected by non- pay considerations
Plant- wide interview program (1928- 1931)
  * Conducted by West Electric
  * From 1928 to 1930, 21 000 employees were interviewed about   their   concern
Finally, they found that work improve when supervisors pay attention to employees

Bank Wiring observation room study (1931- 1932)
The final experiment was conducted study on 14 male workers who assigned to Back Wiring factory.
Its objective was the dynamics of the group when intensive pay was introduced...
