COURSE DESCRIPTION This hybrid course is divided into eight study units (7 on-line and 1 on campus) and consists of an overview of Physician Practice Management coding and Recovery Audit Contractor audits. The course will examine the basic conventions of the CPT coding and documentation process for physician and various outpatient settings. The student will be able to describe, classify, apply, analyze, explain, and support choices made through the CPT/HCPSC code assignment process to various types of records as Evaluation and Management (E&M), anesthesia, surgery and radiology, pathology, and medicine procedures/records. The student will be able to describe the proper use of modifiers, the reimbursement process, use of databases, and evaluate coding quality through the Revenue Cycle up to and including examining the Recover Audit Contractor (RAC) audit and appeals process for various healthcare settings. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 1. Identify organizations that direct the content of the physician office health record and indicate which ones are voluntary and which ones are mandatory. 2. Define documentation guidelines appropriate for use in the physician office health record 3. Define the two levels of HCPCS and the types of codes contained in both levels. 4.
