Functions

Running head: FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT PAPER

In the business world today, it is necessary to have good management skills in order to succeed. Some of these skills include being able to communicate effectively, work well with others, good listener, and open minded. Having these types of skills will help to work well with those you are managing in an organization. Management is defined as the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals (Bateman, Snell, 2009). In today there is lots of competition in the business world so it’s necessary to have good managers. In this paper, the four functions of management will be discussed and applied to the organization I was working for. The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
When I was working as a dispatcher in a transportation company I had to work with all four functions of management. I had to work with about twenty drivers of the company. My duties were to look for loads and negotiate the price loads with the brokers that were selling the loads. After I had the load, I would dispatch the driver with all the necessary information so the driver can go pick up and deliver. In order for the business to succeed the company needed to give good customer service. Good customer service would be picking up the load on time and delivering on time with no problems. I would go in at six in the morning, and the first thing I would do is start to plan my day. In the text book, planning is defined as specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals (Bateman, Snell, 2009). The first thing I would do when I would start to work is list all the driver I had and start to call each one of them to see what type of load they wanted and how far they wanted to go. The company would pick up and deliver from coast to coast dry freight.
Once I knew what driver where available and where they wanted to...
